The Fear of Falls

Have you had a fall or know someone who has? Are you worried about having a fall, either at home or when out and about? If you have concerns about falls, our canberra physiotherapists may be able to assist.

You’re not alone. One in three adults over 65 experiences a fall each year, but the good news is falls are often preventable. The reality is that many people are at risk of falling, specifically those with conditions that affect their balance. The fear of falling can be debilitating for many people, often leading them to avoid certain activities or even leave the house on the off-chance that they’ll take a tumble.

This fear is not unfounded. Due to reduced bone density, falls may result in fractures (specifically of the hip, forearm, pelvis, and humerus), which have the potential to lead to a loss of independence and a reduction in quality of life. Even if you aren’t injured during a fall, it may lead to loss of confidence and fear of recurrence, resulting in a loss of mobility and independence.

What is a Falls Prevention Class?

Our 6 week Falls Prevention Program is an exercise and balance class designed to help you work on your sense of independence and keep you active, both in and out of the home. Led by qualified physiotherapists, our program combines personalised support with expert guidance and practical strategies to help reduce your risk of falling—so you can keep doing the things you love.

The program focuses on developing your balance, strength, and confidence in an effort to help you stay steady on your feet and maintain your quality of life.

Who is the falls injury prevention program suitable for?

What Does the Class Involve?

Participants in our hands-on treatment program can expect:

  • 1:1 Initial Session with a physiotherapist to assess your needs and goals
  • 6 Weekly Group Gym Sessions focusing on balance and strength exercises
  • Small guided group exercise classes (usually around 6 people)
  • Classes supervised by an experienced physiotherapist
  • 1:1 Reassessment Session at 6 weeks to track your progress
  • A Personalised Home Exercise Plan to keep you moving
  • Practical tips and resources that may further reduce your risk of falls, both at home and outdoors

Our program is personalised to each participant’s needs. It typically involves strengthening exercises (for the lower body and core stability), exercises that challenge balance in a safe environment, and progress tracking with reassessment at 6 weeks to ensure you’re meeting your goals.

How Do I Join a Class?

To join one of our falls prevention classes, you will need to first book an appointment with one of our experienced physiotherapists.
They will perform a biomechanical assessment, which looks at how you move and potentially identify any body dysfunctions that may increase your risk of falling. They will also carry out a balance and mobility assessment, which will help them to understand your current abilities and goals.
Your physiotherapist will use all of this information to tailor the program specifically to your needs.

Your Falls Questions Answered

Aging and certain health conditions can reduce the ability to maintain our balance, which leaves those affected vulnerable to falls. Many risk factors can reduce our balance, including:

  • Reduced strength in our lower limbs
  • Vision problems
  • Foot pain or improper footwear
  • Medication usage (such as sedatives and antidepressants)
  • Hazards (such as uneven surfaces, steps, rugs, and clutter)

Yes! While one in three adults over 65 experiences a fall each year, the good news is that falls are often preventable. With the right combination of exercise, balance training, strength building, and environmental modifications, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling and maintain your independence.

Our small class sizes mean that you can receive plenty of one-on-one time with the physiotherapist leading the session. They will take notes about your progress each week, which can be used to alter your program if required. You’ll also have a 1:1 reassessment session at the end of the 6 weeks to track your improvements and discuss next steps.

We can also provide progress reports to family members or carers so that they’re up to date on the work we’re doing.

Yes, our program is designed for all mobility levels, and exercises can be adapted to suit your specific ability and needs. Just because you use a mobility aid (like a walker or walking stick), this doesn’t mean you are at any less risk of falling. In fact, mobility aids can make navigating steps, rugs, and other hazards more challenging.

Absolutely. Our Falls Prevention Program is specifically designed to improve not just your physical strength and balance, but also your confidence in your movement. Many participants find that as they progress through the program, they feel more secure moving around their home and community, allowing them to continue doing the activities they love.
